Kristen and Erik might have wed on Valentine's Day, but it wasn't all hearts and flowers - their NYC nuptials exuded urban chic.

BEHIND THE WEDDING May 6 is Kristen's birthday, and she and then-boyfriend Erik decided to celebrate with an overnight stay in Manhattan. After dinner at Ruby Foo's, the couple headed for drinks in the revolving lounge at the top of the Marriott Marquis Hotel, and then to their hotel room, where Erik lit a candle in a single chocolate-covered strawberry and sang "Happy Birthday" before he got down on one knee and popped the question. Erik is a musician in the rock band One Time and Kristen is a jewelry and accessories designer. Seven years before they became engaged, Kristen attended one of his shows in the Village with Erik's cousin-by-marriage, Karyl-who had been intending to fix Kristen up with Erik's older brother. "It was love at first sight," says Kristen. "We began dating the next day and have been together ever since."


SEEING THE SITES Finding the ceremony site was a breeze: The couple chose St. Patrick's Old Cathedral (the oldest Roman Catholic church in New York City) in Little Italy. The choice of a reception setting seemed-at first-to be just as simple a decision, but then, only two and a half months before the wedding, Bloom Ballroom called to cancel because management had decided to turn the property into a bar/lounge. Luckily, Erik and Kristen had attended a wedding at the W New York Union Square hotel just a few days earlier and fallen in love with the space; luckier still, their wedding date (Valentine's Day, no less) was available. Thanks to the efforts of the W's crack staff, the reception was preplanned, from scratch, in record time.

THEY HEART N.Y. Kristen was escorted down the aisle by her identical twin brothers for the Catholic wedding ceremony. After the recessional, the newlyweds hopped into a vintage New York checkered cab for a photo session in the Flatiron district before heading to the reception. Themes of the day were Valentine's Day and New York City. Tables were named for New York City streets, and red roses and candles were set on every surface. Kristen had designed a heart-and-crown logo, which first appeared on the wedding invitations, and was echoed on the wedding cake, menu cards, and favors. After dinner and lots of dancing and toasts, the reception ended at midnight, but the revelers simply moved the celebration to the W hotel's Underbar. "We left for our room at 3 a.m.," says Kristen, "but the party was still going."
